Do Hair Extensions Damage Hair?

As a hair salon that offers hair extensions, we are often asked if hair extensions damage hair. The honest answer is that properly applied hair extensions won’t damage your natural hair. However, hair extensions that are applied badly or given poor aftercare, will damage natural hair.

Here at Locks and Shades we know that hair extensions are more difficult to look after. This is why we offer loads of aftercare advice during the appointment, at your hair extensions consultation and as you leave the salon. We do this because we care about you, and your hair. We want you to look your best at all times.

Bad hair extensions can do terrible damage to your natural hair and even cause permanent hair loss.   Therefore as experienced extensionists, we feel that we have a duty of care to look after your natural hair. Not just your extensions.

So how can you make sure your hair is damaged by hair extensions?

It is a really good idea to meet with the hair stylist that will be doing your hair beforehand. Book a hair extension consultation so they can see your hair and discuss what you want. You will quickly see if you click with this hair stylist and if you feel you can trust them.

Don’t be afraid to ask for reviews of their extensions, if they have a certificate and how many years experience they have. During your consultation your hair stylist should be giving you tips on how to take care of your hair extensions. If they don’t give you advice or are vague in answers then this should set alarm bells ringing for you.

You could also ask to see photos of other clients, before, during and after their hair extensions. This means you can see the condition of the hair before the hair extensions were applied. It means you will also be able to see the condition of the natural hair when the hair extensions are removed.

Hair extension won’t damage your hair when applied with care and looked after with care.
