New Study Proves Health Benefits Of Tanning Beds

We recently saw an exciting new study in online magazine Life Science Daily. The magazine was sharing some research in a new study published in the British Journal of Dermatology. The study looked at the health benefits of tanning beds when used sensibly.

Here at Locks and Shades we know that sun beds need to be used with care, but we also know how great out clients feel after just after a few minutes on our beds!

We were surprised to come across this research from dermatologists. This is because so often dermatologists are dead against sun beds and tanning. However when used sensibly, dermatologists have agreed that there are health benefits to tanning beds.

The study was completed with adults. The adults were exposed to tanning beds that emit 95% UVA rays and 5% UVB rays. This is around the same amount of rays you would gain in the midday summer sun. Each tanning session lasted six minutes and took place three times a week.

The health benefits of tanning beds that experts found are as follows;

  • Any damage caused by the light exposure was repaired by the skin.
  • The rays of light resulted in the production of nitric oxide. This nitric oxide production resulted in an improved blood flow and a reduction in blood pressure.
  • The sun beds rays also improved the production of beta-endorphins. These beta-endorphins help reduce depression.
  • As you may know, sun beds also help with the production of vitamin D. Vitamin D is essential for health bone growth and strength. Vitamin D can also support asthma prevention.

It is important to note that the study found some damage was caused to the adults DNA during the sun bed sessions, however because the body adapted to the new environment the body had the ability to repair any damage.

Dr Holick who worked on this new study, looking at the health benefits of tanning beds strongly believes that the wide range of health benefits from modest sun exposure, through sun beds, is far superior than taking vitamin D supplements.
