Trying to match when you wash your hair to fit in with your daily schedule and social activities can often be a nightmare; you don’t want to wash your hair so much that it becomes dry and brittle but if you opt to leave your hair unwashed it can dirty and lifeless.
Here at Locks and Shades we know if can be tricky to find that perfect middle ground for the ideal hair-wash schedule and every hairdresser you speak to will tell you something different, so in this blog post we have spoken to our stylists to put together some top hair washing tips to help make your hair washing schedule easier to manage.
What’s Your Hair Type?
There are hundreds of different hair products out there and there is a reason for that – different hair types need different hair products. Each different type of hair needs a different product, but it also needs different attention and hair washing routines.
If you have thicker hair you’ll find you can go longer without washing it, while those with thinner hair will find it gets dirtier and oilier quicker so will need to be washed more frequently. Curly hair will often tend to be drier so can go without washing for longer, while straight hair often needs more regular washing. Coarse hair will need infrequent washes, but silky hair will need to be washed far more frequently.
You get the idea – every hair type is different!
What Do You Do?
On top of your type of hair you also need to consider your lifestyle and what activities you do or have been doing. For example; you wash, blow dry and style your hair for a day in the office and you’re looking fabulous. After work you hit the gym and your fresh looking hair that has been turning heads for all the right reasons, is now turning heads for all the wrong reasons as it looks oily and greasy like it hasn’t been washed for a month.
The more active you are the more you will need to wash your hair, no matter what type of hair you have. When you’re being active you sweat, your sweat then piles up and clogs up the pores, this then dirties your scalp and roots faster loosing the fresh and clean look for your hair.
So, How Often Should I Wash My Hair?
Generally speaking, if you have dry hair then shampoo no more than twice a week, but if you have an oily hair type you may need to wash your hair daily. Normal hair without dryness or oiliness can be washed when you feel it’s needed – but remember, check your hair type, use the right products and consider your lifestyle and activities to ensure you wash your hair when it should be washed.
We would never recommend that you wash it more than once a day; the most you should do is every other day – regardless of your hair type. This is because the washing process of hair being wet is so damaging, especially to finer hair. Try and wash your hair every other day as a maximum and rely on dry shampoo and styling on the in-between days.
